Magdalen Square CIC was set up in 2014.
It is a Community Interest Company (CIC) existing of 24 Shareholders local to the community.
It purchased the land affectionately known as the Romany in order to preserve its recreational purposes and natural habitat and continue to provide facilities for the 1st Wandsworth Scout Group and the Playhouse Playgroup.
It is managed and maintained by directors and a committee with the intention the space remains a natural, peaceful and secluded haven to wildlife and the community.
Once long ago the land was owned by Magdalen College, Oxford.
The Romany site has been protected by restrictive convenants since the 1920's, covenants that ensure the land is for recreational purposes only with a lease being granted in 1925.
Magdalen Square (The Romany) is divided into two sections - Plot A and Plot B.
In 1968, the Scouts took over the lease and the 1st Wandsworth Scout Group continued to occupy half of the land (Plot A).
In 1978, Magdalen Lawn Tennis Club (MLTC) acquired the land. The Scouts continued to use the space with the introduction of the Playhouse Playgroup in 1975 and then the Twins group in 1980.
In 2013, the land was registered as an ACV - Asset of Community Value.
In 2014, a Community Interest Company was formed in order to buy and protect the land and its use for the future.
The Magdalen Square Community Interest Company is now in its 10th year.
